The journey from academic achievement to professional realization is often a complex tapestry of ambition, introspection, and calculated risk. For Maggie Fan, a 2024 graduate of the prestigious Parsons School of Design, this transition marked a pivotal moment, one that would see her eschew the conventional path of internships and freelance work for a bold leap into entrepreneurship. Today, Fan stands as the full-time designer and driving force behind Tang Chi Couture, an avant-garde fashion label rapidly making its mark in the New York City design scene and beyond. Her story is one of deep-rooted inspiration, meticulous craftsmanship, and a fearless pursuit of creative independence.

From Taiwanese Roots to the Heart of Fashion

Fan’s fascination with fashion is intrinsically linked to her upbringing in Taiwan. Her childhood was steeped in the sartorial elegance of her mother, whose meticulously curated walk-in closet served as an early muse. "She really brings those kinds of inspirational moments into how people dress up for events," Fan recalls, drawing a parallel between her mother’s approach to dressing and the burgeoning trend of "Get Ready With Me" videos, highlighting an innate understanding of personal style that predates digital platforms. This familial influence extended to her sister, a budding fashion professional whose work in styling and collecting fashion archives provided Fan with an early window into the industry’s creative potential. "I always snuck into her room and just looked at those beautiful images," she admits, revealing a childhood captivated by the visual narratives of fashion.

Relocating to the United States, Fan embraced New York City as her adopted home for over six years. While acknowledging its undeniable status as a global fashion capital, she emphasizes the city’s relentless energy as a source of constant inspiration. "You might get sick of New York City, but you would never get bored in New York City," she states, underscoring the dynamic environment that fuels her creative drive. Yet, despite her New York-centric career, Fan remains deeply connected to her Taiwanese heritage. The natural forms and textures found in Taiwan’s environment frequently inform her designs, lending a unique organic quality to her work. Furthermore, the slower pace of life in Taiwan has influenced her design process, encouraging a more deliberate and contemplative approach. This fusion of her upbringing with her creative vision has resulted in a brand identity that feels both deeply personal and universally imaginative.

The Tang Chi Couture Ethos: A Deeper Dive into Design

In an era where digital media often dominates creative exploration, Fan champions a more tactile and immersive approach to design research. She believes in the enduring power of physical media, such as coffee table books and print magazines, as foundational elements for collection development. "When you design a fashion collection, you shouldn’t only look at the inspiration involved in fashion," she advises, advocating for a broader perspective that extends beyond the immediate fashion world. "You need to look more outside of the world, like all of the art pieces in exhibitions." This philosophy underscores a commitment to interdisciplinary inspiration, drawing from a wide spectrum of artistic expression to inform her collections.

For her Spring/Summer 2026 collection, Fan emphasized the importance of grounding conceptual ideas in tangible, real-world observations. This observational phase is followed by an uninhibited period of experimentation with sketching and draping, allowing for organic development. "You design while you create something in the process and then I lend it to the things that I like," she explains, illustrating a dynamic interplay between intention and emergent creativity.

The genesis of each Tang Chi Couture piece lies in meticulous detail, beginning with the construction of mood boards. Every design decision is a considered one, guided by an internal dialogue that probes aesthetic choices: "Is this the color that I want for this collection? Should there be a pop of color in there? Is it too dark or too light?" This rigorous process ensures a cohesive and compelling aesthetic throughout each collection, from inception to final execution.

Beyond the creative process, Fan finds immense value in the community that surrounds Tang Chi Couture. "I enjoy seeing all those creatives out there, like the stylists or artists, how they sort of restyle my garments and give new life into the clothing that I created," she expresses. The diverse interpretations and styling choices offered by other creatives provide her with fresh perspectives, enriching her understanding of her own work. "It’s like a different aspect and perspective that I could give into my own clothing, so it’s definitely interesting to see that," she adds, highlighting the collaborative nature of the fashion ecosystem.

Fan’s career trajectory, like that of many creatives, has not been without its challenges. However, she navigates these complexities by trusting her intuition rather than succumbing to fear. This innate resilience has been a guiding principle in her ascent within the industry.

Milestones and Momentum: The Rise of Tang Chi Couture

The coveted opportunity to present at Fashion Week represents a significant benchmark for any emerging designer. For Fan, this dream materialized when Tang Chi Couture was featured in Flair Fashion’s runway showcase in London. The decision to launch her couture brand was not without its anxieties. "I was a little doubtful whether I should launch this couture brand," she admits. "They reached out to me a few times when I was in college, but I never felt like I was ready for that kind of commitment." Ultimately, Fan recognized that Tang Chi Couture was not a deferred aspiration but a destiny unfolding.

One year after her graduation from Parsons, Fan took a monumental step by embracing a challenge that lay outside her comfort zone. "It was definitely a big challenge because it’s the first runway that introduced my couture brand and it was overseas in London," she reminisces. "So it had so many challenges, but I guess I’m the person who really likes to walk out of my comfort zone and take these kinds of challenges to push myself." The London debut showcased her SS26 collection, "Silent Marks," and also served as a deeply personal full-circle moment. Having previously studied abroad at Central Saint Martins in London, Fan experienced a profound sense of nostalgia, revisiting cherished vintage markets and rekindling fond memories.

Following her successful London debut, Tang Chi Couture expanded its reach to Los Angeles through a strategic showroom partnership with L.E.R. Public Relations. This expansion paved the way for significant industry recognition, most notably when celebrity stylist Enrique Melendez took notice of one of Fan’s designs.

Celebrity Endorsements and Evolving Inspirations

The impact of this collaboration was dramatically evident when actress Leah Sava Jeffries graced the red carpet for the season two premiere of Disney+’s "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" in December 2025, stunning in Fan’s SS26 "Tick-Tock" look. This unexpected yet viral moment brought significant attention to Tang Chi Couture. "The accessories were initially inspired by the hour hands on the clock, so I think he sort of related that to the siren and anchor vibes in the show," Fan explains, highlighting the thoughtful connection made by Melendez between her design elements and the thematic nuances of the series.

Melendez’s creative styling further enhanced the impact of the piece. "He switched the back of the necklace to the front so the long part kind of resonates with the anchor of the show, and that’s really interesting," Fan notes, appreciating the insightful adaptation that amplified the garment’s narrative potential.

While Leah Sava Jeffries has become a notable figure associated with Tang Chi Couture, Fan’s inspirations extend to other influential personalities. Her deep admiration for musical artist Lady Gaga, a lifelong passion cultivated since elementary school, significantly shapes her creative outlook. "I grew up listening to her music in elementary school, like me and my dad would play her music in our cars so I really love her," she shares. Fan particularly admires Gaga’s fearless evolution of style, a trait she champions for its boldness and willingness to stand out. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy also resonates with Fan, whose "dark but elegant aesthetic" is described as embodying the core essence of Tang Chi Couture.

A New Chapter: Storytelling and Ambition

Looking ahead, Tang Chi Couture is poised to further define its identity through narratives that intricately weave together dark romance and refined elegance. Fan’s dedication to building the brand behind the scenes signals the commencement of an exciting new phase.

"I am planning to do a collection this year. My goal for this year is to really create a new collection and then to participate in New York Fashion Week to have my own show," Fan declares, articulating a clear ambition for the brand’s future. This strategic focus on developing a new collection and aiming for a New York Fashion Week presentation signifies a deliberate step towards greater industry visibility and impact. She acknowledges the importance of introspection and learning from the industry’s reception of her initial work. "For the first collection, I kind of held back because I wanted to observe what feedback the industry would give me. But for now, I think I’m ready to push further and challenge myself to do more experimental work," she adds, signaling a readiness for bolder creative endeavors.

Fan envisions Tang Chi Couture expanding its creative scope through diverse collaborations. "I definitely want to reach out to more stylists to have different creative collaborations. I want to participate more in the art and creative side, like maybe to do more films," she states, indicating a desire to explore avenues beyond traditional fashion presentations. She also intends to leverage New York City as a backdrop for more of her own photoshoots, further embedding the brand within the city’s vibrant creative landscape.

When asked about her secret to sustained success in the demanding fashion industry, Fan offers a profound piece of advice: "Have a kind mindset and don’t be too easily influenced by other people’s opinions. It’s really, really important or else you’ll get too many unhealthy breakdowns throughout this journey. But yeah, just try to stay true to yourself." This emphasis on mental fortitude and authenticity underscores her commitment to a sustainable and fulfilling creative career.

In moments of stress, Fan finds solace in exploring New York City’s numerous dog parks. "I think, and especially New York, is such a great place for a lot of amazing parks so that’s my favorite place to be in," she shares. Even in these moments of respite, her keen observational skills remain active, subconsciously absorbing details that may one day find their way into future collections. While New York City serves as Fan’s artistic foundation, Tang Chi Couture is undeniably stepping into a world of its own making, propelled by a unique vision and an unwavering commitment to creative integrity.
