Morat’s "Tu Cárcel" Reaches Number One on Billboard Latin Airplay Chart, Reigniting a Classic for a New Generation

Morat has achieved their second number one on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart with their rendition of Los Bukis’ iconic 1986 hit, "Tu Cárcel." The track, which has surged from the tenth position, now claims the top spot on the June 20-dated ranking. This triumph marks a significant moment for the Colombian band, extending their chart success and underscoring the enduring power of a beloved Latin American anthem. Beyond the flagship Latin Airplay chart, the updated version also ascends to the pinnacle of both the Latin Pop Airplay chart and the comprehensive Hot Latin Pop Songs survey, solidifying its widespread appeal across key Latin music territories.

This latest achievement builds upon Morat’s previous chart success. The band, hailing from Bogotá, Colombia, previously topped the Latin Airplay chart for a week in August of the previous year with "Me Toca a Mí," a collaboration featuring Camilo. This new number one signifies a growing momentum for the group within the competitive Latin music landscape.

Reflecting on the accomplishment, Morat shared their profound gratitude with Billboard, stating, "We’re incredibly grateful to celebrate our second No. 1 with ‘Tu Cárcel.’ It’s a song that has been part of our lives for as long as we can remember." This personal connection to the original song undoubtedly infused their interpretation with a genuine passion that has resonated with audiences.

The production of this rendition was helmed by Argentinian producer Nico Cotton, who expressed his honor in contributing to the track. "It was a great honor to have produced this version," Cotton told Billboard. "It’s an undeniable classic, and the challenge was to live up to the original song. I love that it reflects so much of Morat’s sound. The truth is, when there’s a great song and a great band, my job becomes much easier!" Cotton’s sentiment highlights the synergy between the band’s distinct musical identity and the timeless quality of the source material. He further elaborated on the unexpected nature of chart success, adding, "It’s an incredible surprise. When I make music, I never think, ‘This has to be a No. 1,’ but when it happens, it’s something to celebrate and enjoy. In this case, it makes me very happy to see such an incredible classic rediscovered through Morat, and to have been able to contribute my little grain of sand from the production side."

Morat’s "Tu Cárcel," released under Universal Music Spain/Interscope/Interscope Capitol, garnered its Latin Airplay coronation thanks to an impressive 7.6 million audience impressions in the week ending June 11, according to data from Luminate. This strong performance demonstrates the song’s robust reach across radio airwaves and its significant listener engagement.

A Legacy Reimagined: The Journey of "Tu Cárcel"

The original "Tu Cárcel," penned and performed by the legendary Mexican group Los Bukis, led by Marco Antonio Solís, first made its mark on the charts in 1987, peaking at number three on the Hot Latin Songs survey. Los Bukis, formed in 1973, have a storied history on the Billboard charts, accumulating an impressive 17 top 10 hits on the Hot Latin Songs tally between 1987 and 1996, a testament to their enduring influence on regional Mexican music.

The enduring appeal of "Tu Cárcel" is further evidenced by its numerous interpretations throughout the years. In 2004, the Argentine rock band Los Enanitos Verdes offered their soft-rock rendition, which reached number 22 on the Latin Pop Airplay chart. More recently, in 2016, Los Tigres del Norte, a prominent regional Mexican group, released a version featuring Solís himself, charting at number 30 on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. The song has also been embraced by other regional Mexican artists, including Hermanos Espinoza, Alta Consigna, and Yahritza y Su Esencia, showcasing its adaptability across various subgenres of Latin music.

Morat’s current rendition is not only a musical revival but also a significant element within the soundtrack of the Disney+ and Hulu original series "Dear Killer Nannies: Criado Por Sicarios." This series, which delves into the upbringing of the late drug kingpin and politician Pablo Escobar, features the song prominently. The soundtrack was produced by the multi-award-winning Julio Reyes Copello and released through his Arthouse label in partnership with Universal Music Latino/UMG.

Reyes Copello expressed his enthusiasm for Morat’s contribution, stating, "I’m deeply glad I suggested to my friends Morat to record this song and make such a spectacular version alongside the great producer Nico Cotton. The production, direction, and musical language are all a tremendous success. I’m thrilled that it has reached beyond the series and, above all, that new generations won’t miss out on hearing [it]; and with work as disciplined and consistent as Morat’s, it’s a luxury." His endorsement underscores the artistic merit of Morat’s interpretation and its broader cultural impact.

Morat further elaborated on the significance of this particular release, noting, "It’s very special to see ‘Tu Cárcel’ continue finding new audiences beyond radio and live shows. We grew up as huge Disney fans, so having our music featured in a Disney+ and Hulu project is incredibly meaningful. We love seeing our songs become part of different stories, and it’s exciting to know this classic can keep reaching people in new ways." This connection to a Disney+ and Hulu project highlights the song’s ability to transcend traditional musical platforms and engage with audiences through diverse media.

"Tu Cárcel" represents a notable moment for Spanish-language songs originating from Disney films or series on the Billboard charts. While previous Disney-affiliated Spanish tracks like Sebastián Yatra’s "Dos Oruguitas" and Carlos Vives’ "Colombia, Mi Encanto" from the film Encanto achieved success on the Hot Latin Songs chart in 2022 (reaching numbers 2 and 6, respectively), Morat’s "Tu Cárcel" marks the first time a song from such a project has topped the Latin Airplay chart. This achievement signifies a growing trend of Latin music’s integration into mainstream audiovisual content and its subsequent chart dominance.

A Glimpse into Morat’s Future Projects

Adding another layer of significance to this achievement, Morat revealed that "Tu Cárcel" serves as the inaugural single from their upcoming album, Ya Es Mañana Parte 2. The project is described as being "currently in the works" and is inspired by the celebration and reinterpretation of the legacy of Spanish-language pop-rock. "The project is inspired by celebrating and reinterpreting the legacy of Spanish-language pop-rock, so seeing this song connect with a new generation in such a meaningful way makes this achievement even more special," the band stated. This forthcoming album promises to further explore the rich history of Latin American pop-rock, with "Tu Cárcel" setting a high bar for what fans can expect.

The success of Morat’s "Tu Cárcel" on the Billboard charts is a multifaceted triumph. It not only solidifies the band’s position as a leading force in contemporary Latin music but also pays homage to a beloved classic, introducing its timeless appeal to a new generation of listeners. The song’s journey from its original inception in the 1980s to its current chart-topping status, amplified by its inclusion in a popular streaming series, underscores the enduring power of music to connect generations and cultures. As Morat continues to evolve their sound and engage with their audience, "Tu Cárcel" stands as a powerful testament to their artistic vision and their ability to breathe new life into cherished musical legacies. The band’s forthcoming album, Ya Es Mañana Parte 2, is highly anticipated, with "Tu Cárcel" serving as a compelling preview of their dedication to honoring and reinventing the landscape of Spanish-language pop-rock.
