Dsign Music Reflects on Fifteen Years of Shaping the K-pop Soundscape from SNSD to TWICE

The landscape of global pop music underwent a seismic shift in 2009 when a catchy, synthesizer-heavy track titled "Genie" (Tell Me Your Wish) propelled the South Korean girl group Girls’ Generation to international stardom. Behind the scenes of this cultural phenomenon was Dsign Music, a Norwegian songwriting and production collective that has since become one of the most influential forces in the Hallyu wave. Nearly fifteen years after their initial breakthrough, the collective continues to define the sonic identity of K-pop, most recently through their collaboration with JYP Entertainment’s flagship girl group, TWICE. In a comprehensive retrospective, Dsign Music members Anne Judith Wik, Ronnie Svendsen, and Nermin Harambasic shared insights into their creative process, the evolution of the industry, and the meticulous craftsmanship required to produce a Billboard-topping hit.

The Genesis of a Global Powerhouse

Dsign Music’s entry into the South Korean market was not a calculated business move but rather a serendipitous encounter facilitated by the global nature of the music publishing industry. In 2008, while working in Stockholm—a city long regarded as a mecca for pop production—the team was introduced to K-pop by their publisher. At the time, the genre was beginning to experiment with Western production styles to broaden its international appeal. After hearing contemporary K-pop hits, the collective realized that their sensibilities for high-energy, polished pop were a natural fit for the South Korean market.

This realization led to the creation of "Genie" for Girls’ Generation. The song’s success was unprecedented, earning Dsign Music their first Billboard No. 1 and establishing a long-standing partnership with SM Entertainment, one of South Korea’s "Big Three" talent agencies. Over the subsequent decade and a half, the collective has amassed over 40 Billboard No. 1 hits and received a Latin Grammy nomination, working with a prestigious roster of artists including EXO, NCT, MONSTA X, ITZY, and TWICE.

Behind the Melodies of Baby Blue Love

The collective’s latest contribution to the K-pop canon is "Baby Blue Love," a track featured on TWICE’s critically acclaimed tenth mini-album, Taste of Love. According to the producers, the song was a bespoke creation tailored specifically for the nine-member group. JYP Entertainment had issued a creative brief requesting a track characterized by danceable rhythms and infectious hooks.

The track, originally titled "Old School Love," was designed to capture a nostalgic yet contemporary aesthetic. "Baby Blue Love" stands out for its disco-pop influences and retro-funk basslines, a sound that has seen a resurgence in the K-pop industry over the last three years. The production team noted that while the original guide vocals were recorded in English, the transition to Korean lyrics—penned by TWICE member Nayeon—retained the core spirit of their original vision.

One notable anecdote from the production process involved the vocal recording sessions in Seoul. Despite their status as global icons, members of TWICE reportedly felt a degree of nervousness when approaching the new material. The Dsign Music team, communicating through intermediaries and vocal directors, encouraged the artists to focus on the enjoyment of the performance. This emphasis on emotional resonance over technical perfection is a hallmark of the Dsign Music philosophy, and the producers believe this confidence is palpable in the final recording.

The Structural Complexity of K-pop Production

One of the most significant distinctions Dsign Music highlights between Western pop and K-pop is the structural complexity of the latter. In Western markets, radio-friendly tracks often prioritize a consistent "vibe" or atmosphere throughout the song. In contrast, K-pop operates on a "more is more" philosophy.

This approach requires songwriters and topliners (those who write the vocal melodies over a beat) to incorporate frequent "twists and turns." A single K-pop track may blend elements of bubblegum pop, hip-hop, EDM, and R&B within a three-minute window. This versatility is exemplified by Girls’ Generation’s 2013 hit "I Got A Boy," a song Dsign Music co-wrote that is frequently cited by musicologists as a masterpiece of genre-fluid production.

Furthermore, the large size of K-pop ensembles—often ranging from five to over twenty members—presents a unique challenge for producers. Each song must be structured to ensure that every member has a distinct moment to shine, necessitating a high volume of varied verses, pre-choruses, and rap segments. This requirement fundamentally alters the architecture of the song, making it more dynamic than a standard solo Western pop track.

The Collective Process and the Art of the Pitch

Dsign Music operates as a collaborative unit, with roles such as producer, songwriter, and topliner evolving organically within the team. The group credits their longevity to a high level of mutual trust and a shared commitment to the quality of the final product. They adhere to a self-imposed "rule of consensus": a song is only considered finished and ready for pitching if every member of the team is satisfied with it.

The process of placing a song with a K-pop group involves a rigorous pitching system managed by their publisher. Agencies like SM, JYP, and HYBE send out "briefs" to production houses detailing the concept, mood, and target artist for an upcoming project. Dsign Music then creates and submits demos based on these specifications.

Interestingly, the journey of a song does not always end where it began. The producers revealed that tracks are frequently reassigned to different groups within an agency based on how their concepts evolve. For instance, the song "What with You" by EXO was originally intended for NCT, while WayV’s "Unbreakable" was initially conceptualized for EXO. This fluidity demonstrates the highly curated nature of K-pop "concepts," where the visual and thematic identity of a group dictates the musical selection.

Adapting to a Post-Pandemic Industry

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a significant shift in how international producers interact with the South Korean music industry. Prior to 2020, members of Dsign Music spent upwards of 150 days a year traveling, often participating in "songwriting camps" in Seoul where Western and Korean creators collaborate in person.

The transition to remote work via digital communication platforms has altered the creative energy of these sessions. While the technical quality of the music remains high, the team noted the loss of the "social aspect" and the inspiration derived from physical travel. Despite these challenges, the demand for K-pop production has only increased, as the genre’s global footprint expanded during the pandemic lockdowns, with groups like BTS and BLACKPINK reaching unprecedented levels of Western mainstream success.

Market Implications and Future Outlook

The continued success of Dsign Music underscores the globalization of the music industry. The "Scandinavian sound"—characterized by clean production, strong melodic hooks, and sophisticated arrangements—has become an integral component of the K-pop identity. This cross-cultural exchange has not only benefited the producers but has also provided K-pop with a polished, international appeal that transcends language barriers.

As K-pop continues to evolve, Dsign Music remains focused on the future. While they have expressed a desire to collaborate with global juggernauts BTS and BLACKPINK, they also place a high value on working with "rookie" groups. By participating in the debut projects of new artists, the collective helps establish the foundational sound of the next generation of K-pop stars.

The impact of Dsign Music’s fifteen-year tenure is reflected in the charts and the loyalty of the fans. The producers acknowledge that once a song is released, it "belongs to the fans." This fan-centric perspective is vital in an industry where listener engagement is a primary driver of success. Whether a track becomes a massive title hit or a beloved "B-side," the collective’s influence on the auditory landscape of modern pop is undeniable.

As the industry moves forward, the integration of Western production expertise with South Korean performance and conceptual brilliance remains a winning formula. Dsign Music’s journey from a small team in Norway to a cornerstone of the K-pop industry serves as a blueprint for the modern, borderless music professional. With new projects on the horizon and several debut groups in the works, the collective is poised to continue its streak of Billboard dominance, ensuring that the "Dsign sound" remains synonymous with the cutting edge of global pop.
