Sujin Gwon, a dynamic content creator and founder of a burgeoning public relations agency, is rapidly establishing herself as a significant force within New York City’s vibrant fashion and beauty landscape. Her trajectory exemplifies a new breed of global creative entrepreneurs who are adept at navigating and reshaping the flow of international storytelling, particularly bridging the cultural and commercial exchange between East and West. Over the past two and a half years, Gwon has meticulously cultivated her online presence, collaborating with globally recognized brands such as Miu Miu, Medicube, and Collina Strada. Her expertise spans visual identity, branding, and digital media, positioning her as a rising creative force who embodies the modern "girl boss" archetype, seamlessly blending the roles of influencer, muse, and business leader.

In an in-depth conversation with EnVi, Gwon shared insights into her remarkable ascent as a creative founder. The interview, set against the backdrop of the iconic Empire State Building at sunset, with her cat Rumi by her side, offered a glimpse into her philosophy and journey. Gwon articulated her perspective on a new wave of digital creatives who are transforming their online visibility into tangible ownership and influence. From her evolution as a media personality and style icon to her current role as a brand founder, Gwon consistently integrates her cultural heritage from Seoul and New York, not only to shape contemporary culture but also to build a foundational platform for aspiring creatives.

From Seoul’s Artistic Roots to New York’s Global Stage

Gwon’s journey is deeply intertwined with artistic discipline, stemming from her extensive background as a professionally trained ballet dancer. Her academic path further solidified this creative foundation, as she is an alumna of the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. This dual immersion in artistic performance and fashion business management has equipped her with a unique perspective on creativity, discipline, and brand building. After dedicating over 13 years to ballet, Gwon strategically pivoted her focus towards her burgeoning passion for branding, management, and digital media. Her international experiences, including a three-year residency in Los Angeles, have instilled in her a profound appreciation for cultural exploration and a keen eye for emerging trends in beauty and fashion, which she adeptly weaves into her personal and professional identity.

Her global outlook serves as a primary catalyst for her aesthetic sensibilities and entrepreneurial ambitions. Having lived across Seoul, Los Angeles, and New York City, Gwon is particularly drawn to the richness of cultural exploration, the elegance of chic silhouettes, and the distinct energies each metropolis offers. This constant pursuit of novelty is evident in her career transitions, from ballet to content creation, and most recently, to the helm of her global public relations agency, Pink Pen PR. Her drive and dynamism have drawn comparisons to the fictional character Samantha Jones, a testament to her assertive and ambitious professional persona. "Everyone says that in Manhattan, time moves faster," Gwon observed, "and now I understand why. You can’t sit still because everyone in this city is just to keep going. I’ve noticed how New Yorkers have a big picture when it comes to fashion, culture, and beauty, and I’m so excited to be a part of this energy." This sentiment underscores her embrace of New York’s fast-paced, forward-thinking environment.

Upon her initial arrival in New York, Gwon acknowledged the significant cultural adjustment. "When I first moved to New York, I was definitely not used to the culture change. I brought my cat on the flight, and I could tell she was also nervous about moving homes," she recalled. However, the diverse community she encountered through her studies and professional network proved instrumental in her adaptation and sense of belonging. "But thanks to so many diverse people I met at school and through colleagues, I can’t ever imagine living somewhere else." This inclusive environment fostered her desire to integrate her Korean heritage into the Western cultural landscape. "I do love to bring a little of Korea into the Western culture. To let everyone around me know the brands and culture that I grew up with."

The Genesis of Fashion Influence and Pink Pen PR

Sujin Gwon’s entrepreneurial spirit culminated in the establishment of Pink Pen PR, a boutique communications agency born from her profound affection for both New York and Seoul. The agency is dedicated to amplifying the voices of emerging talents, brands, and creators who aspire to connect with a global audience. The core philosophy of Pink Pen PR centers on elevating emerging narratives and crafting distinctive brand stories. "Our ethos focuses on elevating emerging voices and creating a narrative for each talent," Gwon explained. "I really want to make everybody I work with feel special and showcase their mission internationally. Right now, I really want to make sure that Korean beauty and fashion brands have a platform to showcase their products in North America and Southeast Asia. Once I see a brand that has a set vision in mind, anything is possible."

Her foray into content creation and entrepreneurship was directly informed by her academic pursuits at FIT. "At the Fashion Institute of Technology, I studied Fashion Business Management, where I learned how to not only build my professional portfolio, but how to build myself. What kind of creative or director do I want to be? Setting up an identity for me and my content is something so important to me," she stated. This self-awareness and dedication to personal branding laid the groundwork for her ambition to assist others on an international scale. "Through this interest, I wanted to help others internationally. That’s the history behind Pink Pen!"

A particularly formative experience in Gwon’s career was her time assisting Alexandre Mattiussi, the Creative Director of Ami Paris, during the Seoul Cruise 2022 Show. The event, held at the historically significant Gwanghwamun Square, provided Gwon with a profound appreciation for the intersection of culture and fashion. She noted the aesthetic resonance of the architecture, which serves as a tangible link between Korea’s rich past, dating back to the Joseon Dynasty, and its dynamic 21st-century present. This experience deeply impacted her perspective on the global reach of fashion. "Seeing modern Parisian couture within an iconic Korean architecture really awed me into how international and exotic fashion can be. I hope I can aid in something like this again in the future with the help of Pink Pen."

Gwon’s observations on the distinct characteristics of fashion weeks in Seoul and New York offer valuable insights into global fashion trends. She highlights Seoul’s emphasis on emerging trends and its support for avant-garde designers seeking fresh and unique expressions. In contrast, New York fashion week, she notes, often adopts a broader, more macroscopic view. "After coming to New York, I love how I discovered so many closet staples and new brands that focus on function, purpose, and material," she shared. "The designers in America really focus on tradition and making clothes that will become a forever trend in your closet. Philosophy over small, fast trends."

She cites Andersson Bell as a prime example of a brand that masterfully harmonizes divergent cultural influences, blending Korea’s contemporary aesthetic with Scandinavia’s heritage. "I like to describe Andersson Bell as a forever trend, an exotic best friend that lives in your closet," Gwon articulated. "Something that people my age love and enjoy, but also will be a staple in your closet forever. They’re never afraid of experimenting, but always make sure to keep their customers’ satisfaction first." This appreciation for brands that embody a timeless yet experimental spirit underscores her discerning taste and strategic vision for Pink Pen PR’s client roster.

Style, Self-Care, and the Art of Balance

Sujin Gwon’s personal style is a fluid and adventurous exploration, reflecting her dynamic personality. Her fashion choices are characterized by a blend of femininity, chic sophistication, and a willingness to experiment with layering, statement accessories, and playful details, such as studded belts and charming Hello Kitty keychains. For Gwon, fashion is not static but a continuous process of movement and evolution.

Her fashion inspirations are deeply personal and influential. "My favorite brand is Collina Strada," she stated emphatically. "It’s fun, always experimenting, and fighting for sustainability. I always aim to live a clean life with high-quality materials. Collina Strada already has those unique layers, colors, and authentic ethos behind them. I’m so happy that I could be dressed by them for work and would love to collaborate with the brand in the future!" This enthusiasm for Collina Strada’s commitment to sustainability and bold design aligns with Gwon’s own values and aesthetic preferences.

Gwon identifies two primary style icons: her mother and Jennie of the K-pop group BLACKPINK. "My biggest fashion inspirations are my mom and BLACKPINK’s Jennie," she revealed. "My mom has an effortlessly classy style – feminine, chic, and intentional, especially when it comes to collecting vintage Celine and Chanel. Growing up, I became knowledgeable about the past, present, and future of fashion." This familial influence instilled in her an appreciation for timeless elegance and the heritage of luxury fashion. "On the other hand, Jennie is such an iconic symbol of beauty, culture, and fashion. Her custom outfits are so striking, and she’s so unapologetic with her aesthetic." Jennie’s fearless approach to style and her status as a global cultural ambassador resonate with Gwon’s own aspirations.

Amidst the demanding schedule of running a PR agency and managing a growing online presence, Gwon emphasizes the paramount importance of self-care. "I’m obsessed with wellness," she declared. "I just need a couple of hours at the BATHHOUSE with my friends. A good sauna, cold plunge, and lymphatic drainage massage will do the trick. BATHHOUSE does an amazing sauna ritual that’s a multisensory experience. After a relaxing day, I’m ready to get creative and work." This dedication to holistic well-being, drawing from Korean spa culture, is crucial for maintaining her creative energy and professional focus.

Drawing from her background in professional ballet, Gwon understands that optimal performance, both physically and mentally, requires a commitment to inner well-being. "Your 20s are for you to do everything," she advised, embodying a spirit of bold exploration. "So go out in your best outfit, go meet everyone, and see what feels most aligned with you." This philosophy encourages embracing opportunities and discovering one’s true path with confidence and style.

Her daily life, even amidst her demanding career, is punctuated by simple pleasures. Readers can envision Gwon enjoying froyo, taking a leisurely stroll through Flatiron with a matcha latte in hand, or spending a cozy day working from home with her beloved cat, Rumi. Her journey, from a disciplined ballet dancer to a pioneering entrepreneur, serves as an inspiration, showcasing the power of cultural integration, relentless ambition, and a commitment to authentic self-expression in the global creative economy.

Her work at Pink Pen PR is poised to significantly impact the visibility of emerging Korean brands in North America and Southeast Asia, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of Korean fashion and beauty on a global scale. This initiative not only supports the growth of these brands but also enriches the international fashion dialogue with diverse perspectives and innovative designs.
