Maggie Fan Charts a Bold Path from Parsons Graduate to the Avant-Garde Vanguard of Tang Chi Couture

The transition from academia to professional life often presents a critical juncture, a moment where accumulated knowledge meets the practical demands of the industry. For Maggie Fan, a recent graduate of the Parsons School of Design in 2024, this pivotal milestone was marked by a profound blend of elation and introspection. While the conventional trajectory would have been to immediately pursue further internships or freelance work within the fashion realm, Fan felt an emergent calling toward a more independent path. Navigating the increasingly competitive job market, where the pursuit of a full-time position can feel like an exhaustive application marathon, Fan harbored a quiet aspiration for self-reliance and entrepreneurial spirit. This internal deliberation between the security of established employment and the personal investment in her own vision led to a transformative decision that would redefine her career trajectory.

Today, Maggie Fan is not merely working in fashion; she is actively shaping its avant-garde landscape as the full-time designer for the burgeoning label, Tang Chi Couture. Headquartered in the vibrant heart of New York City, Tang Chi Couture has rapidly distinguished itself by reinterpreting classic silhouettes with audacious details, earning critical acclaim within the editorial sphere. In a recent exclusive interview conducted via Zoom, Fan, after a demanding studio session, offered a candid account of the journey, encompassing both the challenges and triumphs that have defined her ascent.

From Taiwanese Roots to the Global Stage of New York

Fan’s fascination with fashion was not ignited by fleeting celebrity trends, but rather by a deeply ingrained familial influence. Raised in Taiwan, her childhood was immersed in the sartorial passions of her mother and elder sister. She vividly recalls her mother’s extensive walk-in closet, a veritable archive of personal style that predated the modern "Get Ready With Me" video phenomenon. "She really brings those kinds of inspirational moments into how people dress up for events," Fan remarked, highlighting her mother’s innate ability to curate looks that were both personal and event-appropriate.

The familial connection to fashion deepened as Fan witnessed her sister embark on a career in the industry, working as a stylist and amassing a collection of fashion archive books. "I always snuck into her room and just looked at those beautiful images," Fan confessed, describing the early allure of the visual narratives within these publications. This early exposure fostered a nascent appreciation for the artistry and storytelling inherent in fashion.

For over six years, Fan has proudly called New York City her home, a city she describes as a global nexus of fashion and an inexhaustible source of stimulation. "You might get sick of New York City, but you would never get bored in New York City," she stated, underscoring the city’s dynamic energy and constant evolution.

While New York serves as the operational base for Tang Chi Couture, Fan remains deeply connected to her Taiwanese heritage. This influence is palpable in her designs, which often draw inspiration from the organic forms found in Taiwan’s natural environment. Moreover, this connection has subtly shaped her creative process. "We live at a much slower pace than New York so it really affected me to have me slow down in my design process," she explained, indicating a deliberate integration of a more contemplative approach into her work. By harmonizing the tangible realities of her upbringing with a forward-thinking creative vision, Fan has cultivated a design ethos that feels both intimately personal and expansively imaginative.

The Creative Crucible: Inside the Mind of Tang Chi

In an era where digital consumption often dominates, Fan maintains a profound respect for the enduring power of tangible resources. Coffee table books and print magazines, she argues, have regained their relevance and continue to be indispensable tools in her creative process. Instead of relying solely on online scrolling for inspiration, Fan approaches her preliminary research by actively collecting and curating. "When you design a fashion collection, you shouldn’t only look at the inspiration involved in fashion," she advised. "You need to look more outside of the world, like all of the art pieces in exhibitions." This philosophy underscores a commitment to broad-minded inspiration, drawing from diverse artistic disciplines to enrich her fashion narratives.

Fan’s approach to her Spring/Summer 2026 collection exemplifies this grounded methodology, emphasizing the importance of grounding conceptual frameworks in tangible, real-world observations. Following this initial research phase, she embraces a period of uninhibited experimentation, engaging in sketching and draping techniques. "You design while you create something in the process and then I lend it to the things that I like," she articulated, describing a fluid interplay between conceptualization and material realization.

The genesis of each Tang Chi Couture piece is rooted in meticulous detail, beginning with the creation of mood boards. Every design choice is a considered deliberation, guided by introspective questioning: "Is this the color that I want for this collection? Should there be a pop of color in there? Is it too dark or too light?" This iterative process is crucial for visualizing and maintaining the cohesive aesthetic of each collection from its inception to its final presentation.

Despite the demanding nature of running a couture brand, Fan identifies a significant perk: the overwhelming sense of community it fosters. "I enjoy seeing all those creatives out there, like the stylists or artists, how they sort of restyle my garments and give new life into the clothing that I created," she shared. She values the diverse perspectives and interpretations that stylists and artists bring to her work, noting, "It’s like a different aspect and perspective that I could give into my own clothing, so it’s definitely interesting to see that." This collaborative spirit enriches the brand’s narrative and expands the creative dialogue surrounding her designs.

Like many creatives, Fan’s professional journey has not been without its complexities. However, she navigates the inherent challenges of the industry by trusting her intuition rather than succumbing to fear. This steadfast reliance on her inner compass has been instrumental in her ability to persevere and innovate.

Stepping Stones to Success: A London Debut and Viral Moments

The aspiration to present at Fashion Week, a platform for designers to showcase their creations to industry leaders, is a shared dream for many. For Maggie Fan, this aspiration materialized when Tang Chi Couture was featured in Flair Fashion’s runway showcase in London. This significant opportunity, however, was accompanied by considerable apprehension. "I was a little doubtful whether I should launch this couture brand. They reached out to me a few times when I was in college, but I never felt like I was ready for that kind of commitment," Fan admitted. Nevertheless, she came to realize that Tang Chi Couture was not a deferred dream but a destiny unfolding precisely as it was meant to.

One year after her graduation from Parsons, Fan made a decisive move beyond her comfort zone by accepting the invitation to showcase in London. "It was definitely a big challenge because it’s the first runway that introduced my couture brand and it was overseas in London," Fan recalled. "So it had so many challenges, but I guess I’m the person who really likes to walk out of my comfort zone and take these kinds of challenges to push myself." The event served as the premiere for her SS26 collection, titled "Silent Marks," and also represented a deeply personal full-circle moment. "I studied abroad at CSM during college. So I really miss London, I love London. The vintage markets that I used to go to, like all those memories sort of came back," she reminisced with palpable enthusiasm. This return to a city that held significant personal memories added an emotional layer to the professional triumph.

Following her impactful London debut, Tang Chi Couture began to extend its reach. Less than three months after the London showcase, the brand established a presence in Los Angeles through a showroom partnership with L.E.R. Public Relations. This expansion paved the way for a significant moment when one of Fan’s designs caught the attention of celebrity stylist Enrique Melendez.

The actress Leah Sava Jeffries, styled by Melendez, made a striking appearance at the season two premiere of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians in December 2025, gracing the red carpet in Fan’s SS26 look, "Tick-Tock." This unexpected placement resulted in a viral red carpet moment, bringing significant visibility to Tang Chi Couture. Fan shared her surprise and delight, noting, "The accessories were initially inspired by the hour hands on the clock, so I think he sort of related that to the siren and anchor vibes in the show."

Melendez’s styling further enhanced the impact of the piece through a thoughtful modification. "He switched the back of the necklace to the front so the long part kind of resonates with the anchor of the show, and that’s really interesting," Fan observed, appreciating the stylist’s creative interpretation and how it amplified the narrative embedded within the garment.

While Jeffries has emerged as a significant figure associated with Tang Chi Couture, the brand’s inspiration extends beyond a single celebrity. Fan revealed a long-standing admiration for musical artist Lady Gaga, identifying herself as a "Little Monster" since childhood. "I grew up listening to her music in elementary school, like me and my dad would play her music in our cars so I really love her," Fan stated. She particularly appreciates Gaga’s fearless evolution of style over the years, applauding her for embracing individuality even when it meant standing out from the crowd. Additionally, actress Anya Taylor-Joy was mentioned as another muse, with Fan describing her "dark but elegant aesthetic" as a perfect embodiment of the Tang Chi Couture ethos.

Turning a New Page: Future Aspirations and Creative Philosophy

Looking ahead, Tang Chi Couture is poised to further solidify its identity through narratives that artfully blend dark romance with refined elegance. As Fan continues to meticulously build the brand from behind the scenes, this next chapter represents a significant phase of growth and creative exploration.

Fan articulated her immediate ambitions: "I am planning to do a collection this year. My goal for this year is to really create a new collection and then to participate in New York Fashion Week to have my own show." This strategic objective signifies a desire to elevate the brand’s profile on a global stage. She explained her cautious approach to her debut collection, stating, "For the first collection, I kind of held back because I wanted to observe what feedback the industry would give me. But for now, I think I’m ready to push further and challenge myself to do more experimental work." This indicates a readiness to embrace bolder creative risks and push the boundaries of her design capabilities.

Fan envisions Tang Chi Couture expanding its creative reach through various avenues. "I definitely want to reach out to more stylists to have different creative collaborations. I want to participate more in the art and creative side, like maybe to do more films," she expressed. She also intends to leverage the unique backdrop of New York City for more of her own photoshoots, utilizing the city’s diverse aesthetic to enhance her brand’s visual storytelling.

When asked about her strategy for maintaining longevity in a demanding industry, Fan offered a guiding principle: "Have a kind mindset and don’t be too easily influenced by other people’s opinions. It’s really, really important or else you’ll get too many unhealthy breakdowns throughout this journey. But yeah, just try to stay true to yourself." This emphasis on mental fortitude and authentic self-expression underscores her holistic approach to navigating the creative landscape.

Even as a self-proclaimed workaholic, Fan finds moments of respite and inspiration in everyday experiences. Her preferred method for de-stressing is exploring dog parks, a pastime that allows her to reconnect with nature and find a sense of calm. "I think, and especially New York, is such a great place for a lot of amazing parks so that’s my favorite place to be in," she noted. Even in these moments of leisure, Fan’s observant eye subconsciously absorbs details from her surroundings, which may very well find their way into future collections. While New York City may have served as Maggie Fan’s academic crucible, Tang Chi Couture is now embarking on a journey into uncharted creative territories, poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of avant-garde fashion.
