The journey from academic achievement to professional realization is often a complex tapestry woven with ambition, introspection, and pivotal decisions. For Maggie Fan, the year 2024 marked such a juncture as she graduated from the prestigious Parsons School of Design. While the conventional path suggested immediate immersion in established fashion houses through internships and freelance work, Fan found herself drawn to a different calling – the allure of independent creation. Navigating the daunting landscape of a competitive job market, where the pursuit of full-time positions often entails a barrage of applications, Fan harbored a secret aspiration: the profound independence of building her own brand. This internal debate between the security of a conventional career and the riskier, yet potentially more rewarding, investment in her own vision culminated in a decision that would irrevocably shape her trajectory in the fashion world.

Today, Maggie Fan is realizing her dream as the full-time designer and driving force behind Tang Chi Couture, an avant-garde fashion label rapidly making its mark in New York City and beyond. The brand is distinguished by its innovative reimagining of classic silhouettes, infused with striking details that have garnered significant attention within the editorial sphere. In a candid conversation with EnVi conducted via Zoom, Fan shared the intricate narrative of her journey, detailing the trials and triumphs that have defined her ascent.

From Taiwan’s Embrace to New York’s Pulse

Fan’s fascination with fashion was not ignited by fleeting celebrity trends but by a deeply personal and familial influence. Raised in Taiwan, her formative years were immersed in the sartorial world of her mother and sister. Her mother’s expansive walk-in closet, a veritable archive of meticulously curated garments, served as an early muse. Fan recalled these moments as precursors to the modern "Get Ready With Me" trend, stating, "She really brings those kinds of inspirational moments into how people dress up for events." This innate appreciation for style was further nurtured by her sister’s burgeoning career in fashion, which involved styling photoshoots and amassing a collection of influential fashion archive books. "I always snuck into her room and just looked at those beautiful images," Fan admitted, highlighting the early seeds of her creative passion.

Relocating from Taiwan to the United States, Fan has embraced New York City as her home for over six years. Beyond its status as a global fashion epicenter, she finds the city’s inherent dynamism endlessly stimulating. "You might get sick of New York City, but you would never get bored in New York City," she remarked, underscoring its vibrant energy.

While New York serves as the crucible for Tang Chi Couture’s creation, Fan’s Taiwanese heritage remains a profound source of inspiration. Many of her designs draw from the organic forms found in Taiwan’s natural landscapes. This influence extends to her creative process, which is characterized by a more deliberate pace. "We live at a much slower pace than New York so it really affected me to have me slow down in my design process," she explained. By harmoniously blending the essence of her upbringing with her creative vision, Fan has cultivated a brand that resonates with both personal depth and imaginative flair.

The Genesis of Tang Chi Couture’s Aesthetic

In an era where digital content often dominates, Fan reaffirms the enduring significance of tangible resources in the creative process. For each collection, her preliminary research is rooted in a tactile approach to collecting, rather than passive scrolling. "When you design a fashion collection, you shouldn’t only look at the inspiration involved in fashion," she advised. "You need to look more outside of the world, like all of the art pieces in exhibitions." This philosophy underscores her commitment to drawing inspiration from a diverse range of artistic disciplines, fostering a richer and more multifaceted design vocabulary.

Discussing her Spring/Summer 2026 collection, Fan emphasized the critical role of grounding concepts in real-world observations. This foundational stage is followed by an uninhibited exploration through sketching and draping. "You design while you create something in the process and then I lend it to the things that I like," she articulated, describing a fluid interplay between conceptualization and material realization.

The narrative of each Tang Chi Couture piece originates in its meticulous details, beginning with the construction of mood boards. Every design choice is a considered decision, guided by introspective questioning: "Is this the color that I want for this collection? Should there be a pop of color in there? Is it too dark or too light?" This iterative process is fundamental to visualizing and preserving the aesthetic integrity of each collection from its inception to its final execution.

Beyond the demanding pace of design, Fan cherishes the sense of community that her couture brand fosters. "I enjoy seeing all those creatives out there, like the stylists or artists, how they sort of restyle my garments and give new life into the clothing that I created," she shared. She values the diverse perspectives and interpretations that stylists and artists bring to her work, remarking, "It’s like a different aspect and perspective that I could give into my own clothing, so it’s definitely interesting to see that." This collaborative spirit enriches the brand’s narrative and expands its creative reach.

Like many artists, Fan’s career path has not been without its complexities. However, she navigates the inevitable challenges by relying on her intuition rather than succumbing to fear, a testament to her resilience and conviction.

Stepping Stones to Recognition

The coveted opportunity to present at Fashion Week, a platform showcasing a designer’s creations to industry luminaries, became a reality for Fan last year at Flair Fashion’s runway showcase in London. This significant achievement, however, was preceded by moments of doubt. "I was a little doubtful whether I should launch this couture brand. They reached out to me a few times when I was in college, but I never felt like I was ready for that kind of commitment," she confessed. Yet, it became clear that Tang Chi Couture was not a deferred ambition but a destined realization.

One year post-graduation, Fan took a monumental leap by embracing discomfort and stepping outside her established boundaries. "It was definitely a big challenge because it’s the first runway that introduced my couture brand and it was overseas in London," Fan reminisced. "So it had so many challenges, but I guess I’m the person who really likes to walk out of my comfort zone and take these kinds of challenges to push myself." The London showcase unveiled the visual narrative of her SS26 collection, "Silent Marks," and served as a deeply personal full-circle moment. Having studied abroad at the Central Saint Martins (CSM) during her college years, Fan found a profound connection to the city. "I really miss London, I love London. The vintage markets that I used to go to, like all those memories sort of came back," she recounted with palpable enthusiasm. This successful debut solidified Tang Chi Couture’s presence and signaled its readiness to be presented to a global audience.

The Muses Behind the Masterpieces

Within three months of her London debut, Tang Chi Couture expanded its reach to Los Angeles through a strategic showroom partnership with L.E.R. Public Relations. This expansion soon led to a significant endorsement when one of Fan’s designs caught the attention of celebrity stylist Enrique Melendez.

Actress Leah Sava Jeffries graced the red carpet for the season two premiere of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians in December 2025, stunning in the SS26 look titled "Tick-Tock." This unexpected placement, which became a viral red carpet moment, was a significant affirmation for Fan. "The accessories were initially inspired by the hour hands on the clock, so I think he sort of related that to the siren and anchor vibes in the show," Fan shared, explaining the thematic resonance.

Melendez’s creative styling of the piece further intrigued Fan. "He switched the back of the necklace to the front so the long part kind of resonates with the anchor of the show, and that’s really interesting," she noted, appreciating the stylist’s interpretive vision.

While Jeffries has become a notable figure associated with Tang Chi Couture, Fan’s inspirations are multifaceted. Prior to her deep immersion in fashion, she was a devoted "Little Monster," a term for fans of the global music icon Lady Gaga. "I grew up listening to her music in elementary school, like me and my dad would play her music in our cars so I really love her," Fan shared. She admires Gaga’s fearless evolution of style over the years, a trait Fan aspires to in her own work. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy also emerged as an influential figure, with Fan describing her darkly elegant aesthetic as perfectly embodying the spirit of Tang Chi Couture.

Charting the Next Chapter

Looking forward, Tang Chi Couture is poised to define its identity through compelling narratives that intertwine dark romance with refined elegance. As Fan continues to meticulously build the brand behind the scenes, this new chapter signifies a period of ambitious growth and creative exploration.

Fan revealed her concrete plans for the immediate future: "I am planning to do a collection this year. My goal for this year is to really create a new collection and then to participate in New York Fashion Week to have my own show." This ambition reflects a deliberate evolution, building upon the brand’s initial reception. "For the first collection, I kind of held back because I wanted to observe what feedback the industry would give me. But for now, I think I’m ready to push further and challenge myself to do more experimental work," she added, indicating a readiness to embrace bolder creative risks.

Fan envisions Tang Chi Couture expanding its creative horizons through various avenues. "I definitely want to reach out to more stylists to have different creative collaborations. I want to participate more in the art and creative side, like maybe to do more films," she stated. She also intends to leverage the unique backdrop of New York City for her own photoshoots, further embedding the brand within the city’s vibrant cultural fabric.

Her advice for maintaining longevity and creative integrity in the demanding fashion industry is both simple and profound: "Have a kind mindset and don’t be too easily influenced by other people’s opinions. It’s really, really important or else you’ll get too many unhealthy breakdowns throughout this journey. But yeah, just try to stay true to yourself." This emphasis on inner conviction and resilience is a guiding principle for her professional journey.

For moments of respite from her demanding schedule, Fan seeks solace in the city’s numerous dog parks. "I think, and especially New York, is such a great place for a lot of amazing parks so that’s my favorite place to be in," she noted. Even in these moments of relaxation, Fan’s keen observational skills remain active, subconsciously absorbing the details of her surroundings that may very well inform future collections. While New York City serves as Fan’s academic and professional foundation, Tang Chi Couture is embarking on a journey into an expansive and creatively rich new world.
